MATCH RECAP | Stockport 3 Chorley 0

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH

The Magpies fell to their second defeat in three days at Edgeley Park as sub Matt Warburton helped himself to a 17-minute second half hat trick.

Team News

Nyal Bell and Jordan Keane replaced Frank Mulhern and Matt Warburton as Jim Gannon made two changes from his side's 2-2 draw with Nuneaton.

Jamie Vermiglio kept an unchanged side for the third game running.

Line-ups

Stockport: Hinchliffe; Minihan, Duxbury, Keane, Palmer (c), Stott, Thomas, Walker, Bell (Mulhern, 81'), Osborne (Dimaio, 76'), Stephenson (Warburton, 46'). Subs not used: Downing, Ormson.

Chorley: Urwin; Challoner, Blakeman, Teague (c), Leather (Whitham, 76'), Meppen-Walter, A.Newby (Glynn, 62'), O'Keefe, Carver, Almonnd (Wilson, 70'), E.Newby. Subs not used: Cottrell, Anson.

Action

Adam Thomas had the first effort on target, but his tame header on 13 minutes was easily held by Matt Urwin. Stockport looked threatening with their pace up top and focal point Nyal Bell missed a glorious opportunity to opening the scoring, getting in behind the Chorley defence with a run from the half way line, only to fluff his lines at the vital moment.

Chorley’s best chance of the half fell to Elliot Newby, but the midfielder blazed over from 20 yards after Courtney Meppen-Walter’s ferocious pass was controlled by Louis Almond for a near brilliant assist.

Andy Teague blocked an Elliot Osborne shot inside the box as Stockport countered, before Almond went close when cutting in from the right, in what was at times an exciting, fast-paced first 45 minutes.

Sub Matt Warburton fired the first shot in anger of the second half, whistling an effort just wide of Urwin's right hand post.

Almond made Hinchliffe work with a spin-and-shot as The Magpies began to get a foothold with an hour gone. Josh Wilson had a goal ruled out less than a minute after coming on, before Stockport went straight down the other end and took the lead.

Nyal Bell got loose down the right channel and pulled the ball back for the dangerous Warburton who sidefooted home under pressure.

Five minutes later the game was gone. A mistake in midfield allowed Bell a run at the backline and his pass found Warburton in acres of space to slam home past an unprotected Urwin.

Warburton's third was similar to his second as he was fed in the area on a breakaway before coolly sliding the ball under Urwin from close range.

That's what he said

Jamie Vermiglio

We said after the Bradford game that we needed a reaction and we didn't get one tonight. But we won't be singling anyone out. We win as a team and lose as a team. There's nothing broken, it's just two games and we'll look to get back to winning ways on Saturday.
