MATCH PREVIEW | Stockport County (a)

The Magpies (1st, 30pts) make another relatively short journey for a National League North fixture this evening, hopping down to south Manchester for a date with Jim Gannon's Stockport County (13th, 17pts).

Despite a first defeat of the season at Bradford (Park Avenue) on Saturday, Jamie Vermiglio's men remain in pole position, just as they have since the opening week of the campaign.

In contrast, the Hatters have suffered a stuttering start to their sixth consecutive season of tier six football, finding themselves mired in mid-table with almost a third of the season played.

Player numbers

Matt Challoner, Andy Teague, Elliot Newby & Marcus Carver remain the only Magpies to have started all 16 games so far this campaign.

Goalie Ben Hinchliffe is the only County player to have started every Vanarama National League North match so far this season.

The Opposition

Still boasting the highest average attendance in the division (3,237), our hosts continue to search for that winning promotion formula after falling short in the playoffs last season. Losing top scorer Jason Oswell to League Two Morecambe was a setback in the summer, but County recruited a number of individuals during the offseason who know the level well.

That's what he said

Jamie Vermiglio

We'll look to rebound from the defeat at Bradford on Saturday with a positive result at Stockport. It's nice to have another game follow on so quickly, it gives us a chance to get that loss out of our system and get back to playing to the high standards we set ourselves. Stockport is always a tough place to play, especially with the big backing they receive, so we'll have to be on top of our game.

Last season

Both regular season games ended in 1-1 stalemates, but the season tie was broken in the promotion playoffs when Jason Walker's close range effort silenced a crowd of over 6,000 at Edgeley Park and to gifted The Magpies passage to the semi-finals.

Stats

EDGE-ley Park: The Magpies are unbeaten in five visits to Stockport since promotion in 2014, winning three and drawing two

Home sweet home: Tonight's game marks County's fifth straight home fixture, having played the entire month of October on familiar turf

Rebound: Since December 2015 Chorley have lost consecutive games only three times, and over the last year a win or draw has followed a loss on eight out of nine occasions

Home pressure: County have won only two of seven league matches at Edgeley Park this season, conceding at least one goal in each game
